Data Center Engineering Operations Technician – Northern Virginia

Amazon Data Services, Inc. (Job ID: 3168529) is looking for a skilled Engineering Operations Technician to support the day‑to‑day functions and maintenance of our data centers.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct daily building rounds to monitor and record information from electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment.
• Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS).
• Assist with troubleshooting facility and rack‑level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
• Perform rack installs and decommissioning within internal SLA.
• Conduct preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Write technical documentation to support the change management program.
• Manage daily work requests, resolve issues, and execute projects from conception to completion.
• Provide on‑site support to contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors, ensuring all work aligns with established practices, procedures, and local regulations.
• Work flexible shifts, up to 12 hours, with possible call‑out and on‑call rotations.
• Support more than one location or site as needed.

Work Schedule

• Weekend Rotation – Sunday to Tuesday, plus every other Saturday; alternating 3‑ and 4‑day weeks; 5:30 am–6:00 pm day shift or 5:30 pm–6:00 am night shift.
• Weekday Rotation – Wednesday to Friday, plus every other Saturday; alternating 3‑ and 4‑day weeks; 5:30 am–6:00 pm day shift or 5:30 pm–6:00 am night shift.

Overtime & Pay

• Time and a half after 40 hours per week.
• Night shift differential of 13 % for 6:00 pm–6:00 am shifts.
• Maximum of 60 hours per week, including up to 20 hours of overtime.

Physical Requirements

• Willingness to work in various physical conditions with reasonable accommodations.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently.
• Participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
• Perform construction tasks while on a ladder, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, and work above shoulder height.
• Use ear protection as required.

A Day in the Life

The role serves as the front line for electrical and mechanical preventive maintenance and troubleshooting. You will report to the Data Center Facility Manager, maintain mission‑critical equipment such as standby diesel generators, 3‑phase electrical systems (switchgear, UPS, PDUs), wet cell batteries, CRAHU units, chillers, cooling towers, water and air handling systems, pumps, motors, and associated systems. Additional support includes fire/life safety equipment, building automation, and general facilities equipment.

Basic Qualifications

• Ability to work shifts longer than eight hours.
• Minimum of 2 years practical experience with electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or fire suppression systems.
• Capability to work in unusual positions, manipulate small components, navigate uneven terrain, and work at heights and on ladders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of network design and low‑voltage cabling.
• Experience in data center engineering.
